John W. Auchincloss was appointed Executive Director of the Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF) in February 2020. Before he was named acting president in May 2019, Mr. Auchincloss served three years as FAF vice president, general counsel, and assistant secretary. In that role, he was responsible for the FAF’s legal and compliance functions and provided strategic legal advice and guidance to the FAF, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

Mr. Auchincloss has deep experience with nonprofit governance, tax, and regulatory issues. Prior to joining the FAF, he served as general counsel and secretary for Commonfund, a private, nonprofit asset management firm.

Earlier, Mr. Auchincloss served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Auchincloss began his career at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Washington, D.C. and New York City.

Mr. Auchincloss received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University, a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, and an LL.M. degree from Cambridge University.
